Actress Anna Kendrick will star in the upcoming crime thriller Unsound. Last year, Kendrick headlined the hit black comedy A Simple Favor, and will soon appear as Santa Claus’ daughter in the Disney+ holiday film Noelle.
In pop culture, Kendrick is best known for portraying Beca Mitchell in the Pitch Perfect franchise. Given her triple-threat skill set, she’s been able to diversify her filmography over the years, and even landed an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress thanks to her performance in the 2009 Jason Reitman dramedy Up in the Air. In 2013, Kendrick recorded the single “Cups" for the Pitch Perfect soundtrack, and released the memoir Scrappy Little Nobody in 2016. Born and raised in Maine, Kendrick began her career on Broadway, starring in the musical comedy High Society.
Per Variety, Kendrick has been named as Unsound’s lead actress. The film will follow a New England state trooper who investigates a gang leader’s prison escape, all the while dealing with her own hearing loss. The narrative will reportedly lead to a “vast life-threatening conspiracy.” Unsound will be directed by Bharat Nalluri, who most recently helmed the 2017 drama The Man Who Invented Christmas starring Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, and Jonathan Pryce. Unsound’s screenplay was written by Matthew Ross and Christopher Edwards.
Unsound has been described as an independent thriller, and producers XYZ and CAA Media Finance will reportedly seek production deals at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. Though Kendrick is indeed an A-list actress, she has a long history of working with indie filmmakers, most notably Joe Swanberg. In the 2013 beer-themed dramedy Drinking Buddies, Kendrick co-starred with Olivia Wilde and Jake Johnson, and also met her current partner, cinematographer Ben Richardson. Kendrick and Swanberg later reunited for the indie films Happy Christmas and Digging for Fire. Next year, she’ll appear in a voice role for DreamWorks’ Trolls World Tour, and also has a lead role in Joe Penna’s upcoming science fiction thriller Stowaway.
While some actresses begin their careers in indie cinema and later pick and choose the best mainstream roles, Kendrick continues to surprise fans with her selections. Given her love for performance, whether it’s acting or singing, her indie connections allow for more creative freedom while contemplating future big-budget movies. Kendrick utilizes her distinct voice for the web series Human Discoveries, and also has two more web series in the works via Dummy and Love Life. Kendrick will cater to one fan demographic with her upcoming Disney+ Christmas movie, and further build a separate fan base through Unsound.
