The writers of the Arrowverse have recruited comic book writer Marv Wolfman to help bring “Crisis on Infinite Earths” to life. Wolfman is the writer of the seminal comic book storyline on which the upcoming DC/CW crossover will be based. Designed to help commemorate DC’s 50th anniversary, the 12-issue series ultimately changed the entire landscape of the DC universe, killing off multiple characters and merging various parallel Earths into one. As such, it is fondly remembered as one of the greatest comic book stories to this day. Wolfman is also responsible for creating such popular characters as Blade - who has been confirmed for Phase 5 of the MCU.
Kicking off with Arrow in 2012, the Arrowverse quickly expanded to include The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. They were later joined by Supergirl, which began life on CBS before jumping to The CW for its second season onward. Over the last few years, the annual crossover has become a staple of the connected universe. Their last combined outing was called “Elseworlds” and saw them dealing with the reality-altering threat posed by a man named John Deegan. This particular crossover was notable for introducing The Monitor - another creation of Wolfman’s - and teasing “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. Equally, the collective episodes served to bring Batwoman into the fold, played by Ruby Rose. The upcoming crisis was further set up in each Arrowverse season finale.
Speaking at the Television Critics Association panel for Arrow’s final season, as reported by ComicBook, Marc Guggenheim revealed that he and Wolfman had co-written the story. How much of Wolfman’s involvement actually translated into the process of writing scripts remains to be seen, however. Given the sprawling cast from across multiple shows and wide-ranging personal and collective continuities, writers of each individual show will also no doubt have been on hand to contribute.
This won’t be Wolfman’s first foray into television. He previously wrote for Batman: The Animated Series and a two-part Transformers special. In front of the camera, Burt Ward will reprise the role of Robin from the 1960s. Brandon Routh will also be reprising a previous role, starring as not only Ray Palmer, but the Kingdom Come version of Superman. Likewise, LaMonica Garrett will also play dual roles, playing both The Monitor and his villainous counterpart: Anti-Monitor. “Crisis on Infinite Earths” will revolve around the heroes trying to halt the universe-ending threat posed by the latter, which will have a major impact on The Flash season 6 and see Black Lightning introduced to the main continuity for the first time.
Whatever the level of Wolfman’s input, his mere involvement is sure to delight fans. One of the common complaints aimed at comic book adaptations is not adhering strictly to the source material. With the original author on board, it will put many minds at rest that the saga will be done justice and with the utmost respect. As well as that, any changes will be infinitely more palatable with Wolfman attached to ensure everything at least remains true to the spirit and tone of his work. Though many would still prefer to have seen the storyline on the big screen, Wolfman’s inclusion will also no doubt add to fans’ excitement to see the Arrowverse’s interpretation.

“Crisis on Infinite Earths” begins Sunday, December 8 on Supergirl, continues Monday, December 9 and Tuesday, December 10 on Batwoman and The Flash, respectively, before concluding with a double-bill of Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow on Tuesday, January 14.
