WARNING: Major SPOILERS from Supergirl season 5, episode 9 “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 1.”
The first installment in Crisis on Infinite Earths showcased the Anti-Monitor destroying the world of one of the Arrowverse’s core heroes, Supergirl. Since the end of the Elseworlds crossover, the fate of the Multiverse has been at stake for quite some time. But it wasn’t until the beginning of this season where time was starting to run out. Supergirl was the first show in Greg Berlanti’s Arrowverse that existed on its own Earth. This was due to the series being launched at CBS for its first season before moving to The CW when the network saved it for season 2.
But season 1 established the Multiverse concept as The Flash season 2 had Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) travel to Kara’s Earth, which is where their friendship began. With Crisis on Infinite Earths set for this year’s crossover, it was expected by viewers that Supergirl’s universe would merge with Earth-1. While Kara and the show’s principal cast did end up on Earth-1, it didn’t happen the way people expected.
During the events of “Crisis on Infinite Earths: Part 1”, Earth-38 became the Anti-Monitor’s next target. As the anti-matter wave was unleashed, Kara had to suffer another loss before losing Earth-38. Argo City, the last living part of Krypton, ended up being destroyed while also killing her mother Alura (Erica Durance). Forced to mourn the death of her mother later, Kara and the other heroes began to evacuate as many of Earth-38’s population as possible before it was too late.
Towards the latter half of the episode, the heroes do everything they can to get people out of Earth-38. But they were also forced to take on the Shadow Demon army. In an attempt to buy themselves more time, the heroes used quantum towers to slow down the anti-matter energy. Through their big effort, the Monitor (LaMonica Garrett) states that 3 billion people made it to Earth-1 before Earth-38 was destroyed. With this being just the first chapter in the Arrowverse crossover, it’s too soon to predict the outcome for Supergirl after Crisis on Infinite Earths.
However, the Girl of Steel has now officially become a citizen of Earth-1 along with Clark Kent (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois Lane (Elizabeth Tulloch) which subtly sets up the Superman and Lois spin-off show. It will certainly be a major status quo change for Alex Danvers (Chyler Leigh), Martian Manhunter (David Harewood), Brainiac 5 (Jesse Rath), Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath), Dreamer (Nicole Maines) and Kelly Olsen (Azie Tesfai) during and after the crossover. But with Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) now dead and Earth-38 gone, the battle has only just begun as Crisis on Infinite Earths continues on Batwoman, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow.
