The CW’s highly anticipated Arrowverse crossover Crisis on Infinite Earths will now get a tie-in from the original comics writer. Crisis on Infinite Earths, which brings together five of DC’s major TV shows, Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow, is now days away as the crossover story begins this Sunday with Supergirl.
The Arrowverse began in 2012 with the debut of Arrow, and at that time, there were surprisingly no plans in place for the universe of superheroes we have now. But after Flash season 2 introduced the idea of alternate universes, and the Flash even crossed over into Supergirl season 1, the wheels were in motion for a grand project. This Sunday will be the first episode of the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover of superheroes, which not only includes lead characters from the respective shows, but former stars reprising old roles as well. Tom Welling will reprise his role as Superman from Smallville, which will be one of the three Supermans we will see in these various universes.
In an interview with THR, Arrowverse producer Marc Guggenheim and the writer of the original Crisis on Infinite Earths comic book series, Marv Wolfman, shared some more exciting news for fans of the Arrowverse as they gear up for Sunday. According to Guggenheim, the story they wanted to tell, was in fact, “bigger than the five hours” of television they have in store for fans. And after discussing the idea of a comic tie-in with Dan Evans from DC, Guggenheim stepped in to co-write the two 24-page issues (with a 16-page back story) with Wolfman.
The very idea of two comics connecting with and being an additional part of a live-action television series is unique and intriguing. However, according to Guggenheim, it allows them to kill two birds with one stone and give fans the characters they wish they could see on the TV show but cannot for one reason or another. “I started off with Felicity Smoak,” Guggenheim said when discussing what characters he wanted to add to the comics. The comics also include Ray from the Crisis on Earth-X crossover, Nyssa Al-Ghul, and Wally West. There are also appearances from marquee characters such as Batwoman, Barry Allen, and Sara Lance, but those four are the core characters that drive the comic book part of CW’s Crisis On Infinite Earths.
In 2019, superhero crossover stories are by no means revolutionary, but they will always turn heads, and the addition of a comic book tie-in gives fans something fresh as well. The CW has done a very good job building up to Crisis on Infinite Earths, which concludes on January 14th, 2020. With shows like Arrow coming to an end, fans can expect big events to take place in this crossover epic, and we will also see how the Arrowverse will move forward after the departure of long-time characters.
Crisis on Infinite Earths Giant No.1 debuts exclusively in Walmart on December 15th, and the second issue will be available on January 19th.
