The CW’s new Stargirl trailer has just arrived, and it reveals the fate of one of DC Comics’ earliest superhero teams: The Justice Society of America. Created as a predecessor to the Justice League, this team will play a major role in the upcoming Stargirl series, as main protagonist Courtney Whitmore is carrying on the name of one of its key members, Sylvester Pemberton / Starman.
Formed to battle the Nazis during World War II, fans first saw the Earth-1 version of the old Justice Society of America during the second season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, where they helped the Legends with one of their missions. After their leader, Rex Tyler/Hourman, was murdered by the time-traveling Reverse-Flash, fellow Justice Society member Amaya Jiwe/Vixen would join the Legends for two seasons before returning to her village in Africa, even striking up a romance with Nate Heywood, the grandson of teammate Henry Heywood/Commander Steel. The group would be mentioned a few times throughout the course of Legends of Tomorrow, as well as a few of their descendants making appearances, but their exploits after the war remained largely undefined.
The new Stargirl trailer, which was posted last night following the airing of the five-part Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover events’ final two episodes, depicts protagonist Courtney Whitmore discovering a powerful weapon called the Cosmic Staff in a dark basement. After it reacts in her hands, her stepfather Pat Dugan explains that it belonged to the original Starman, who battled alongside the Justice Society of Earth-2. He then goes on to reveal that they all died fighting an unrevealed enemy, with Starman leaving his staff in Pat’s care until the day came for someone else to “carry the torch” and use the staff’s anti-gravity powers to protect humanity once more. Set to premiere on The CW sometime this spring, Stargirl will tell the story of Courtney as she takes up Starman’s mantle and rallies together a new generation of the Justice Society to battle evil. Pat, being Starman’s sidekick from back in the day, will assist her in his trusty battle robot S.T.R.I.P.E. as they and new heroes such as Doctor Mid-Nite, Hourman, and Wildcat face off against the sinister Injustice Society. The new team made a brief cameo appearance near the end of Crisis, where they were shown after the Multiverse was reconfigured following the Anti-Monitor’s defeat.
It’s worth pointing out that this version of the Justice Society is not the same one that helped the Legends, as Stargirl takes place on the newly formed Earth-2 – which is not the same one that was previously shown on The Flash during its second season. That particular Earth was erased from existence prior to the Crisis. Still, the tragedy that led to their demise will likely serve as a source of drama in the upcoming series, as Courtney and the others will have to cope with carrying out the legacy that these great heroes left behind. Fans will be able to see the new team in action, and likely get some answers as to what killed the old one, when Stargirl makes its debut on The CW sometime this spring.
