Season 1 of Daredevil ended with something of a victory for lawyer-by-day, vigilante-by-night Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox). Despite the loss of good people and several pints of his own blood, the Daredevil finally managed to take down Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and his criminal enterprise. The justice-defending trio of Matt, Foggy (Elden Henson), and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll), their friendships straining under the weight of major secrets, seemed to be on their way to repairing their relationships for a better future.
When the series returns for season 2 this month, Matt will quickly discover that any triumph is short-lived in this city. The Netflix promos have revealed that the Daredevil will be dealing with a number of challenges, including the return of his enigmatic former flame Elektra (Elodie Yung) – which coincides with the sudden onslaught of the ninja clan The Hand. While Matt’s mired in love triangle dilemmas with Elektra and Karen, he’ll also be tackling some bromance drama with Foggy.
The main focus of Daredevil this year, however, involves new vigilante Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher (Jon Bernthal). Two cool new Marvel motion posters (h/t CBM) have been released to further build the suspense of the showdown between two men with violently opposing viewpoints on achieving justice against evil.
Motivated by revenge for the death of his family, Castle believes in the severest form of justice, dealing out death as punishment to anyone he deems deserving. While Matt struggled in season 1 against his desire to kill Fisk, he ultimately stuck to his principles and let the legal system do its work. His clash with Castle brings these issues to the forefront once again, as The Punisher finds ruthless ways to convince Daredevil to accept that murder is the only answer to defeating the enemy.
So far The Punisher looks to be on the winning side of this argument. Both of the posters above feature dripping blood, both from Daredevil himself and the stitched-together mask that’s been torn from his head. The eerie glowing cross announcing “Sin Will Find You Out,” a real-life New York City neon sign, echoes the theme of good versus evil and the punishment that awaits this season. How well Daredevil survives his encounter with the executioner, both physically and philosophically, will hopefully be revealed as quickly as we can binge-watch the new episodes.
Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 later in 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
