Though originally conceived as four individual TV series for Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, culminating in The Defenders miniseries, Netflix’s foray into Marvel heroes went way better than expected. Fans flocked to the gritty, noir, more down-to-earth portrayals of crimefighters Jones and Matt Murdock, and both earned season 2 renewals before their counterparts’ series had even aired.
With Season 2 of Daredevil arriving next month, Netflix has been slowly building the suspense with new posters and teasers for the show. We’ve already had glimpses of Season 1’s returning characters, Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), plus a newly costumed Daredevil (Charlie Cox) in chains. Marvel also teased the character responsible for our hero’s plight, justice-at-all-costs vigilante The Punisher (Jon Bernthal).
Now we get a look at another complication in Matt’s life, former flame Elektra Natchios (Elodie Yung). The promo above shows the highly trained assassin in action, expertly wielding her trademark sai to take down her foes. The accompanying poster for the character clearly shows her, like season 1’s Daredevil, in a low-key black outfit, with just a hint of a draping red collar she can raise to obscure her face.
The official synopsis for season 2 pits Daredevil against The Punisher for much of the action, but the drama that unfolds involves Matt’s ongoing struggle to balance his “normal” life as a lawyer and the sometimes morally sketchy gray areas of his life as Daredevil.
While The Punisher will force Matt to choose what exactly it means to be a hero, it appears Elektra will be following a character-defining journey of her own. Actress Yung, who describes Elektra as “a sociopath,” says that the mystery and ambiguity of this cold killer adds up to a fascinatingly complex personality:
Matt himself will also be trying to figure out who she is. As Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb describes it, Matt’s ability to read who’s telling the truth is thrown off by Elektra. His emotional attachment to her complicates his objectivity, and he’s never really sure if he’s being manipulated or not. Considering how alluring the character is in just the small teaser clip above, it’s not tough to see how our hero might lose a little perspective in her presence.
“We wanted to create a character with different layers. I think Elektra isn’t a bad person, but she’s not a good person. She’s a person with different traits, with layers, and she’s seeking who she is. In this season, there’s an arc to her story. Hopefully, we’ll find out who she is, by the end of it.”
While there might be some criticisms about the character’s simple costume, it fits in well with the tone of Daredevil so far, and we’ll likely see an upgrade as Elektra’s character develops throughout the season. Daredevil season 1 and Jessica Jones season 1 are now available on Netflix. Daredevil season 2 will debut on Netflix on March 18th, 2016, followed by Luke Cage season 1 later in 2016. Release dates for Jessica Jones season 2, Iron Fist, and The Defenders on Netflix have not yet been announced.
