War has been revealed as a playable character alongside Strife in the upcoming game Darksiders Genesis, and it’s been announced two people will be able play together simultaneously in a co-op mode. Developed by Airship Syndicate and published by THQ Nordic, Genesis is a top-down hack-and-slash which acts as a prequel to the Darksiders series, which depicted a war between Heaven and Hell that prematurely brought on the apocalypse.

Although the first three mainstream games all took place during roughly the same time period, Darksiders Genesis is set thousands of years in the past and tells the story of how the Four Horsemen were tasked with both the destruction of the Nephilim and then the eradication of Hell’s master demons after the fall of Eden. This game is also the first time players will be able to take on the role of Strife, the gun-slinging fourth Horseman of the Apocalypse.

Joining Strife is War, powerful swordsman and star of the original Darksiders, confirmed by a trailer on the game’s official YouTube channel. Single players will be able to switch between Strife and War instantly, apparently utilizing one Horseman for long-range attacks and the other for close-up hack-and-slash combat, while two players will be able to pick their chosen character of mass destruction and play through the game in a cooperative mode. The Diablo-inspired Genesis also promises RPG elements like weapon enhancements, creature cores, and new abilities, all staples of the Darksiders series.

Although both the top-down perspective and co-op mode are firsts for Darksiders, the team behind Genesis’ developer Airship Syndicate is comprised of two co-founders of Vigil Games, developers of the original Darksiders and Darksiders II before THQ filed for bankruptcy in 2012. If the hero of the first game returning as a playable character is any indication, perhaps a cooperative play mode and the ability to switch between horsemen instantaneously were ideas the original team may have been wanting to do for some time.

While the game does not yet have a concrete release date or confirmed rating, THQ Nordic has stated Darksiders Genesis will arrive on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Google Stadia sometime in 2019. The latest Darksiders III DLC was solid but unspectacular, and although Darksiders III is currently free on PlayStation Plus many fans are surely excited to once again take up the iconic blade Chaoseater as the original death-bringer, War, Rider of the Red Horse. Slicing up angels and demons can only be better when shared with a friend, after all.
